city fountain

A morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.
Do you think you’ve already seen everything in Wernigerode? Not at all. In the colorful old town, it is not only worth strolling through the streets — it is also worthwhile to look left and right. You have seen the town hall and the castle, but now turn your attention to the city’s beautiful fountains. The most famous is probably the Wohltäterbrunnen (Benefactors’ Fountain) on the market square. It is named after the people commemorated there who have rendered special services to the town. You will find names such as Otto von Stolberg-Wernigerode (Vice Chancellor under Otto von Bismarck), Dr. Adolph Siegmund Friedrich (1812–1892), a physician who co-founded the Harz Association for History and Antiquity, and since 1991 also a plaque honoring the courageous Colonel Gustav Petri (1888–1945), who, as combat commander shortly before the end of World War II, refused to turn Wernigerode into a combat zone. This allowed the town to be handed over in 1945 without major bloodshed. A popular meeting place is Nicolaiplatz on Breite Straße with its well-known Göbel Fountain. Professor Göbel from Halle (Saale) created a fountain that, similar to his hometown, reflects the history of Wernigerode. In a modern way, the bronze figures tell various aspects of the town’s history. More fountains in Wernigerode… From Breite Straße, a passage leads to the Brunnenhof, a shady spot on hot days. While strolling through the city, you will discover many more fountains: for example, the proud rooster on Breite Straße, a former millstone in Nöschenrode, or the bucket-drawing fountain at the entrance to the Christianental valley. In the Heideviertel, the oldest part of the town, there is a fountain over 500 years old that was rediscovered during construction work in 1998. The fountain at Neuer Markt invites visitors to linger, where you can also admire bronze figures such as an Elwedritsche female with offspring — a mythical creature from the Palatinate Forest that has apparently found its way into the “colorful town” of Wernigerode. Did this make you want to take a fountain walk? We would be happy to show you where to find these wonderful works of art.
