Cave stalactites in Rübeland

An alternative to the autumn weather is offered by the stalactite caves in Rübeland
The Baumann’s Cave and the Hermann’s Cave are among the oldest show caves in Germany and are particularly rich in unique and diverse stalactite formations. In the Baumannshöhle, guided tours take you deep into the Harz mountains, where you can learn everything about the cave, its stalactites, and its inhabitants. The cave was already discovered in the 16th century by the miner Friedrich Baumann, and since then organized tours have been offered. Its most famous visitor is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited the cave several times and gave his name to the beautiful underground natural stage in the Goethe Hall, where numerous events and concerts take place. The Hermannshöhle is also well worth a visit, with cavern spaces reaching up to 50 meters in height. A special highlight is the Olm Lake, home to Germany’s only population of cave salamanders (olms), as well as the sparkling Crystal Chamber.
