Is there a GDR (East German) design?

A lavish amount of decoration always serves to conceal something, namely the lack of true beauty. – J.R. Becher
We clearly believe that there is indeed a typical GDR design oriented toward functionality and durability (today one would probably say sustainability). The conflict between modernity, the need to satisfy consumer demands, and resource-intensive production through deliberately anti-fashion, durable design, posed major challenges for designers in the GDR at the end of the 1960s.In the permanent exhibition on ‘Form and Design in the GDR,’ everyday objects have been displayed in Wernigerode on Gießerweg for ten years. A private collector from Wernigerode, who has persistently gathered objects and documents related to GDR product culture, presents an everyday world of consumer goods strongly influenced by the Bauhaus movement and its students.‘Thus, strictly speaking, this is not an exhibition of design objects, but a history museum that evokes stories in each individual visitor, allows everyone their own personal interpretation, and does not impose a single narrative.’ – Private collector. An exhibition that brings joy to anyone interested in design or history and may, at times, bring a smile to the visitor’s face. Learn more here.
